Know the Signs of Gum Disease

Gum disease can be tricky to recognize because it can sneak up on you over time.  Something that seems normal in your mouth may not be a good thing. It could actually be a sign that you have gum disease and need to see our dentist in Encino.

This condition can be detrimental to your teeth and overall health. It’s important to know how to recognize its signs to intervene as early as possible.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

What to Do If You Have Periodontitis Symptoms

If you have any of the above signs of gum disease, you should see our Encino dentist for a gum disease (periodontitis) screening. During your visit, we’ll take x-rays and examine your teeth and gums.

The X-rays will show if there is tartar below the gums and around the roots of your teeth. If there is buildup, it means that the supporting bone and gum tissues will have pulled away from the tooth. This leaves an opening, or “pocket” between the tooth and gum.

During a periodontal exam, we use a special instrument called a probe. This small tool allows us to measure how deep this pocket is.  The deeper the opening, the more severe the gum disease, and the more bone loss that’s occurred.

The level of gum disease present will determine what kind of treatment you need.
